CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Held annually in April, Black Maternal Health Week is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about racial disparities in maternal health outcomes for black mothers in the United States.

Closer to home, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County (HMHB) is supporting and amplifying the message of this effort through the services it provides on a daily basis.

Through its Mahogany program, HMHB targets high-risk women who reside in six of Broward County’s highest risk zip codes. HMHB gives these women access to parental education, nutrition support, counseling and parenting classes that help reduce infant mortality. This week, Commissioner Melissa P. Dunn of Lauderhill honored HMHB with a Proclamation for Black Maternal Health Week.

“These services make a difference where they are needed most,” said Dawn Liberta, Executive Director of HMHB. “We are proud to stand with black mothers, not only during this important week, but every day of the year.”

Along with providing essential services, part of the HMHB mission is to recognize excellence in parenting. During its 32nd annual Mother’s Day Luncheon, HMHB will pay tribute to eleven outstanding Mothers of the Year, one Outstanding Father of the Year and two Guardian Angels. The luncheon will be held on April 29, at the Coral Springs Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, located at 11775 Heron Bay Boulevard in Coral Springs.
