MIAMI – The Miami City Ballet is bringing the holiday magic of George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker” back to South Florida, offering an immersive experience both on and off the stage.
Attendees will get a chance to step into the Land of Sweets, where toy soldiers march, snowflakes shimmer, and the Sugarplum Fairy reigns at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House.
For Jordan Elizabeth Long, a principal soloist who performs as the Sugarplum Fairy, it’s a role that brings cherished memories to life.
“I love being the Sugarplum Fairy because she gets to come out and dance with the angels,” Long said. “When you’re out there, you remember what it was like when you were that age and wishing to be a ballerina.”
The production, a timeless holiday story about a young girl’s magical journey sparked by a Nutcracker gift, blends classic tradition with South Florida flair. Miami City Ballet is one of only a few companies worldwide with the rights to perform Balanchine’s iconic version of the ballet.
“The Nutcracker by George Balanchine is really unique and exciting for us to be doing,” said Chase Swatosh, a principal dancer performing as the Cavalier. “In addition to that, our version is unique because no one else has the same sets and costumes that we have.”
The company has been rehearsing since October, perfecting every movement in its Miami studio. Performers dedicate five days a week to preparing for the show, which features a live orchestra, over 100 dancers, and stunning costumes.
“There’s music, acting, dance, kids, a lot of fun stuff going on,” Swatosh said.
For Long, the production’s accessibility to audiences of all ages is a standout feature.
“It is a holiday story, but it’s very approachable for children,” she said. “It’s very easy for them to recognize the music that they’ve heard in commercials and different places during the holidays.”
The ballet’s whimsical world, brought to life by Miami City Ballet’s unique vision, aims to inspire and uplift audiences.
“I hope people are entertained. I hope they’re filled with inspiration and hope,” Swatosh added.
The Nutcracker runs through Dec. 24.
