Balloon releases are one step closer to becoming illegal in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida lawmakers have moved forward a bill that would make it illegal to intentionally release balloons.

SB 602 passed on Tuesday by a unanimous vote of 18-0 in the Committe on Fiscal Policy.

The bill would consider balloon releases littering, and people who are found in violation would face littering charges and fines.

A similar bill is moving through the Florida House.

HB 321 sponsored by Rep. Linda Chaney, R-St. Pete Beach, would also ban balloon releases due to the harmful impact on marine animals and birds.

If any of these bills become law, they will take effect on July 1, 2024.
