South Florida military families receive back-to-school supplies

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ The United Way of Broward County is helping hundreds of students in military families get ready to return to school.

On Wednesday, the United Way of Broward Countyā€™s MISSION UNITED distributed 900 backpacks filled with school supplies to families with active military members and veterans.

The drive-thru style giveaway was held at the United Way of Broward County, located at 1300 S. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale.

According to the United Way, the backpacks were ā€œfilled with an assortment of necessary school supplies including notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, highlighters, markers, crayons, glue, folders, index cards, scissors, erasers, and more.ā€

Advanced registration and proof of military service were required to receive a backpack.

Per a news release, ā€œMISSION UNITED is a community-based initiative convening and aligning public and private resources in Broward County to support U.S. military service members, Veterans, and their families by helping them acclimate to civilian life.ā€
