Opa-locka residents drown in high Miami-Dade water bills

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Residents in Opa Locka reported they were wrongly billed thousands of dollars for water they didn’t use, and it has been happening for months.

A bill started at about $1,400. It went up $400 more and then was a whopping $9,062. Lizbel Vazquez and Jani Russell were among the residents who wanted answers from the Miami-Dade County Water & Sewer Department.

A spokesperson for the agency said they are working with each customer so they don’t have to pay outrageous amounts, as crews work to find the cause of the problem.

“In response to the media inquiry from Ch. 10, the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) has protected the accounts of the properties so staff can review the account histories,” a spokeswoman for the agency said in a statement. “Staff will also proactively perform meter tests for the water meters at both addresses to ensure they are properly operating according to established parameters.”
