TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Zoo Miami will remain closed on Sunday, as Florida prepares for the next hurricane.

Ron Magill, the spokesman for The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens, announced the closure was due to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s declaration of a state of emergency for Miami-Dade County.

“Decisions on closing for the next few days will be made on a day-to-day basis,” Magill wrote in a statement.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Saturday afternoon that he declared a state of emergency in Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, and 32 other Florida counties.

WEATHER AUTHORITY: Tropical Storm Milton to intensify quickly into a hurricane heading to Florida

DeSantis’s executive order followed the National Hurricane Center’s forecast that Tropical Storm Milton would strengthen into a hurricane, land in western Florida, and cross the state to the Atlantic.

It was still too soon to determine the specifics of the hurricane’s Florida landfall next week, but the Tampa Bay area was highly likely.
