NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Even before feeling the effects of Hurricane Milton, North Miami public works employees prepared for flooding and shoppers increased demand for supplies at Costco on Sunday.
There was a risk of flooding in Miami-Dade County until Thursday. Robert Fandino and Sam Bernard were among the city employees working on Sunday.
“All you have to show is show your ID with your city address in it and you’re good to go,” Bernard said about the free sandbags at the North Miami Motor Pool, at 1855 NE 142 St., which reopens at 8 a.m., Monday.
Rodrigo Sousa was unaware that Milton was getting stronger in the Gulf of Mexico and heading for Florida, but he noticed a high demand for bottled water.
“The sign says, ‘NO WATER.’ I say to my wife, something is probably coming up,” Sousa said.
Lea Raquel and Yoselin Franco also noticed some shortages at the wholesale store. If the power goes out, the frozen section is a bad idea, so canned food and dry goods are the way to go.
“Just get the necessary, what’s not going to spoil too fast,” Franco said.
