Tampa-area shelters filling up as residents seek safety ahead of Milton

TAMPA, Fla. – The Wind has been picking up in a very dicey Tampa Bay area as Hurricane Milton moves over land.

Heavy rain and wind from the storm has led to officials shutting down causeways and bridges, the Sunshine Skyway among them.

For many, the safest place is a shelter until the storm moves past.

“I’ve been in Florida since ‘89 and this is my first time ever evacuating,” said Orlando Soto. “I just don’t trust what’s coming.”

Pizzo Elementary School in Tampa is near capacity as families have come piling in at the last minute, Hurricane Helene fresh on their minds.

“There is a lot of debris, especially in south Tampa, west shore, Pinellas County,” said Sarasota resident Dennis. “I think it’s going cause even more trouble.”

People are starting to hunker down as the wind gusts and storm surge is expected to continue getting worse.
