1 dead, 8 hurt after major Turnpike crash in Davie

DAVIE, Fla. – Emergency crews shut down Florida’s Turnpike Tuesday afternoon following a crash between a van and a tractor-trailer that sent multiple victims to local hospitals and left one person dead.

It happened near the Griffin Road exit in Davie.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, medics pronounced a female dead at the scene. Authorities did not specify whether she was an adult or child.

According to Davie Fire Rescue, medics took eight people — five adults and three children — to Memorial Regional Hospital and Broward Health Medical Center.

An FHP spokesperson said one of those hurt was a baby.

Traffic camera video showed several fire rescue vehicles and a medical helicopter at the scene.

Video from Sky 10 showed a heavily-damaged van and several vehicles stopped on the highway.
