DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives hope releasing a surveillance video may help provide tips into the murder of Bobby Joe Abernathy II earlier this year in Deerfield Beach.
It has been 191 days since Abernathy was killed. Deputies found him wounded shortly before 1:20 a.m., on April 10, in the parking lot of an Extended Stay America, at 1200 SW 11 Way. Fire rescue personnel took him to Broward Health North where he later died. He was 30.
Abernathy had been grieving himself. His mother, Shawntee Abernathy, who was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived in Coral Springs, died on March 10. The Abernathy family attended one funeral after the other at the L.C. Poitier Funeral Home in Pompano Beach.
“It is totally devastating to lose two family members in 32 days,” Cecil Jones wrote in a GoFundMe page.
The Abernathy family had celebrated the matriarch’s 57th birthday on Feb. 25, but they couldn’t celebrate Bobby Abernathy’s 31st birthday, which would have been in June. Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detective Kristina Luna knows the family needs closure and she needs the public’s help.
Luna has been searching for a Nissan Rogue. On Friday, BSO released a surveillance video hoping for helpful tips. Since Oct. 3, Broward County Crime Stoppers has been offering a reward of up to $10,000 for tips leading to an arrest in the case.
Detectives asked anyone with information about this case to call Luna at 954-321-4210 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
