OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – A woman was shot in the arm Sunday morning during a burglary in Oakland Park, authorities said.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Claudinne Caro-Guaraldi, deputies responded to a report of a shooting near the 4900 block of Northeast 13rd Terrace just after 5 a.m.
She said responding deputies located the woman, who had a gunshot wound to the arm.
Deputies provided first aid to the woman until Oakland Park Fire Rescue arrived and transported her to a local hospital. Her injuries were said to be non-life-threatening.
According to Caro-Guaraldi, detectives learned that the shooting was related to a burglary in which the woman was the perpetrator.
She has since been arrested and identified as 31-year-old Ruika Abdulrahman.
Local 10 News reporter Hannah Yechivi was at the scene later in the morning and spotted a gunshot hole in the driver’s side window of a white Mercedes-Benz SUV.
Pieces of cloth or towels with what appeared to be blood on them were also spotted.
A sergeant at the scene told Yechivi that Abdulrahman was trying to break into the vehicle when she was shot.
“I just heard it, and I know it wasn’t fireworks -- it’s not the Fourth of July, so I knew something was going on. It was very, very loud,” neighbor Rocco Kryns said.
BSO’s Oakland Park District Crime Suppression Team and BSO’s Violent Crimes detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the burglary and shooting.
