Key Biscayne police covered the remains with a blue tarp and roped off a portion of the beach in yellow crime scene tape.

“Everybody is extremely surprised, it’s highly unusual to find a body part on the beach,” resident Ivo Kusijamovic said.

A woman, who didn’t give her name, told Local 10 News that she realized something was amiss when police had blocked her normal walking route off.

“He signaled with his finger that I needed to turn around immediately,” she said. “I understood the assignment.”

She added that the find was “quite disturbing.”

“This is my typical route,” she said. “Our neighborhood is very safe. We have our children here; our children play on these beaches and it’s just beyond belief.”

Miami-Dade police homicide detectives are now investigating.

“Detectives are on scene and are working with the Medical Examiner to determine the identity of the individual,” a police spokesperson said.

On Thursday, police confirmed that the head was that of an adult male.
