The City of Progress is earning top marks, when it comes to safety in the state of Florida.
According to a comparison conducted by WalletHub, Hialeah is the second safest city in the state, right after Port St. Lucie.

In order to determine the safest cities in which to live, WalletHub compared 182 cities including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state across three key dimensions: 1) Home & Community Safety, 2) Natural-Disaster Risk, and 3) Financial Safety.
Here is the criteria for home and community safety followed by the researchers on WalletHub’s website:
- Presence of Terrorist Attacks
- Number of Mass Shootings
- Murders & Non-Negligent Manslaughters per Capita
- Forcible Rapes per Capita
- Assaults per Capita
- Thefts per Capita
- Sex Offenders per Capita
- Law-Enforcement Employees per Capita
- Active Firefighters per Capita
- EMTs & Paramedics per Capita
- Hate Crimes per Capita
- Share of Sheltered Homeless
- Perception of Safety (Safety walking alone during daylight/night):
- Drug Poisoning Deaths per Capita
- Traffic Fatalities per Capita
- Pedestrian Fatalities per Capita
- Road Quality
One other South Florida city also earned a spot for safest city. Pembroke Pines was also mentioned in the comparison.
Here are the rankings for Florida cities in the top 100 on the list:
- Port. St. Lucie: 32
- Hialeah: 53
- Cape Coral: 59
- Pembroke Pines: 73
