Photojournalist Mario Hernandez retires after 45 years at WPLG

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Local 10 has said goodbye to a news legend. Photojournalist Mario Hernandez retired on Wednesday after 46 years on the streets of South Florida.

Hernandez covered so many big stories during his nearly five decades at WPLG, including the Mariel boatlift, the Elian Gonzalez saga and Hurricane Andrew.

“If I started to put all the names of the people, the anchors, reporters, people who have gone to ABC, CNN the Pope blessing, the shuttle. There’s an incredible amount of people,” said Hernandez.

He is trading South Florida’s beaches for the Rocky Mountains. He will be enjoying his retirement in Colorado.

Congratulations, Mario!
