PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Nine-year-old Spencer Loftus is full of energy and loves school, playing with her friends, and modeling.
You’d never guess this pint-sized girl is a cancer survivor.
“When I used to get chemo in my chest, I would scream bloody murder every time,” Spencer recalled.
Spencer was diagnosed in 2020 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of 5. It was a scary diagnosis as she had to receive chemotherapy; she even lost her hair twice.
“As the mom that I am, I shaved it the first time for her and the second time. So we were the bald twins,” her mother, Tracie Summerville, told Local 10 News.
Spencer is one of several pediatric cancer warriors who will strut their stuff during the Art and Fashion Funds the Cure event hosted by the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
The event is taking place at the Britto Palace during Miami Art Week. The funds raised will go towards the Wells Brain Tumor Center at UF Health.
“At this time of year, there are children all across America writing lists of what they want. They’re looking through catalogs, they’re online. But most pediatric cancer warriors, when they are right in the middle of that fight, it’s one wish,” said Dawn Zachman, NPCF’s chief operating officer.
The hope is these cancer warriors can grow up to fulfill their dreams. It’s something Spencer’s mom knows all about, as she watches her daughter, now healthy, grow up.
“We had some highs and lows, we got through it. We really did,” said Summerville.
Spencer hopes by participating in this fashion show, she can inspire other kids just like her.
“I want them to know that, you believe in yourself. Even if you’re going through hard times, you’re still loved by God, your parents, and family members. Just be a warrior and a survivor. And brave,” said Spencer.
The Art and Fashion Funds the Cure event is taking place on Friday, December 6. Visit the NPCF website for ticket information.
