Miami police said the incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. on Nov. 23 when the victim arrived at a home near the 700 block of Northwest 10th Street in the city’s Spring Garden neighborhood to meet a friend.

As the victim walked through a nearby parking lot, police said 33-year-old Kimberly Nicole Shingles confronted her, saying, “You’ve been wanting to fight me?” before punching her in the face.

Residents of the area intervened to break up the fight, during which the victim’s gold chain broke, police said.

Shortly afterward, Shingles allegedly emerged from her apartment wielding a hammer and tried to approach the victim again, but neighbors restrained her, according to the arrest report.

Authorities said the victim later went to the University of Miami Hospital, where she discovered that the bottoms of both her earlobes had been sliced off.

She told police she was unaware of the extent of her injuries or when they occurred during the altercation, the report stated.

Detectives obtained a sworn statement from the victim, who they said identified Shingles in a photo lineup as the person who attacked her.

The victim said she has known Shingles for about 10 years and that they had been in conflict for the past five years, according to police.

Shingles was detained at her residence on Tuesday and questioned by detectives.

Police said she denied having a knife during the altercation and made a statement that was redacted in the publicly released report.

Jail records show Shingles was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Her bond was listed as “to be set,” and as of Wednesday, she remained in custody.

Police have not disclosed what prompted the initial altercation.
