LITTLE TORCH KEY, Fla. – A trio firing off an AR-15 rifle at makeshift targets at a homemade “range” on the Florida Keys could have had deadly consequences Thursday, deputies said.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, their “negligence” sent a bullet flying into a Little Torch Key couple’s bedroom while the two were inside with their dogs.

MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said deputies were called to the couple’s home on Pirates Road at around 4 p.m. and “heard several active gunshots coming from Kings Cove Road.”

There, he said deputies found three people firing shots at their ersatz range facing Pirates Road: Nathan John David Charter-Kimberly, 24, Jessica Ellen Rene Hargrove, 25, and Robert Andrew Mayette, 51.

“Charter-Kimberly was in possession of a Smith & Wesson AR-15 rifle as well as a handgun,” Linhardt said.

Authorities released photos of the range, which featured, among other things, several crudely spray-painted targets and Gatorade bottles.

Deputies arrested the trio on charges of unlawful discharge of a firearm and culpable negligence.

All three were being held in MCSO’s Key West jail facility as of Friday with no bond listed.
