LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – An apartment fire in Lauderdale Lakes left a family of five displaced late Sunday night, first responders said.

It happened at around 11:45 p.m. within a unit at the 2801 Somerset Drive building in the sprawling Somerset Condominiums complex.

“Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and a fully involved apartment. Fire crews launched an aggressive attack on the fire and successfully extinguished the flames within 15 to 20 minutes,” a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue news release states. “Despite their swift efforts, the fire gutted the apartment, rendering it uninhabitable. Fortunately, two adjacent apartments were saved without any damage.”

Officials said the American Red Cross is now assisting the family.

“The Red Cross is providing emergency financial assistance, health and mental health services, one-on-one support to connect people to available recovery assistance and will continue to provide additional support to the families to meet their disaster-caused needs,” an American Red Cross news release states.

Authorities haven’t said whether they’ve determined a suspected cause for the blaze.
