5 displaced after Lauderdale Lakes apartment fire

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – An apartment fire in Lauderdale Lakes left a family of five displaced late Sunday night, first responders said.

It happened at around 11:45 p.m. within a unit at the 2801 Somerset Drive building in the sprawling Somerset Condominiums complex.

ā€œFirefighters arrived to find heavy flames and a fully involved apartment. Fire crews launched an aggressive attack on the fire and successfully extinguished the flames within 15 to 20 minutes,ā€ a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue news release states. ā€œDespite their swift efforts, the fire gutted the apartment, rendering it uninhabitable. Fortunately, two adjacent apartments were saved without any damage.ā€

Officials said the American Red Cross is now assisting the family.

ā€œThe Red Cross is providing emergency financial assistance, health and mental health services, one-on-one support to connect people to available recovery assistance and will continue to provide additional support to the families to meet their disaster-caused needs,ā€ an American Red Cross news release states.

Authorities haven’t said whether they’ve determined a suspected cause for the blaze.
