MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in tracking down a suspect who stole a vehicle with two children inside.
Deputies said that person jumped into a white Mitsubishi and drove away only to then discover than a two year-old boy and six year-old girl were inside.
The vehicle was stolen in the 7100 block of Northwest 50th Street after the children’s mother briefly left the vehicle with the children inside, deputies said.
The subject abandoned the vehicle at Northwest 74th avenue and 47th street.
Police put out an alert to be on the lookout for the vehicle and a Virginia Gardens officer located it about a mile away.
“When the officer approached the vehicle, he discovered that the children were unharmed in the back seat and the subject or subjects, in this particular case, had abandoned the vehicle,” said Miami-Dade Detective Angel Rodriguez.
The children have since been reunited with their family.
“It is extremely important to never leave your vehicle unattended with the vehicle running, and especially if you have children in the car,” said Rodriguez.
