HealthCAST: Advancements in hearing loss treatment help long Covid patients

Expert recommends ‘Overcoming Hearing Loss’ book

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Dr. Adrien Eshraghi, a surgeon-scientist, specializes in hearing disorders and focuses his research on helping patients like Kelsie Gonzalez.

Eshraghi is a University of Miami Miller School of Medicine professor in the departments of neurological surgery and biomedical engineering.

Eshraghi recommends long Covid patients to undergo hearing diagnostics and for physicians to get his latest book on “Overcoming Hearing Loss.”

“We can manage that appropriately if the patient is referred to us fast,” Eshraghi said about Covid-related hearing loss.

Long COVID patients like Gonzalez are learning that postinfectious inflammation can damage the inner ear as well as the auditory pathway.

Gonzalez, who is Local 10 News anchor Kristi Krueger’s daughter, found treatment and she said she decided to share her story so others can find solutions.

Gonzalez also experienced debilitating Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the ears when no external sound is present. Her treatment includes steroid shots, diuretics, and migraine medication.

“I am doing a lot better today,” Gonzalez said, adding she also avoids caffeine, chocolate, and processed meats.
