Jail records show Calvin Navarro is facing one count each of possession of a short-barrel rifle or machine gun, third-degree grand theft of a firearm, and fleeing and eluding police.

The incident began when the Miami police Tactical Robbery Unit spotted a white Mercedes-Benz SUV near Northwest Seventh Avenue and 67th Street just after 8 p.m.

Police said Navarro’s car matched the description of one involved in a previous robbery in the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office’s Intracoastal District.

That’s when detectives said they attempted a traffic stop at Northwest 18th Avenue and 62nd Street, but Navarro fled at a high speed.

Officers deactivated their lights and sirens and monitored the car from a distance, according to an arrest report.

Shortly after, police said the Mercedes collided with another vehicle at Northwest 23rd Avenue and 50th Street, flipping it onto its side and leaving debris scattered across the intersection.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene just after 8 p.m. and transported “multiple individuals” to a nearby hospital, according to authorities.

Investigators said Navarro was found trapped in the driver’s seat of the Mercedes and was assisted by firefighters at the scene.

During the rescue, police observed a black holster on Navarro’s waistband and recovered the car keys, which they said fell from his clothing.

A Glock 17 pistol with an extended magazine and a machine gun conversion device, known as a “switch,” was found about 10 feet away from Navarro, according to investigators.

Police said the gun, which held 32 live rounds, was reported stolen from Miami Gardens in 2019.

Authorities confirmed that three other passengers in the Mercedes, all aged 19 to 20, were questioned and released without charges.

They told police they repeatedly urged Navarro to stop during the chase, the report stated.

Local 10 News has requested Navarro’s mugshot.
