The shooting happened on Dec. 22, 2024, around 9:15 p.m., when officers with what was then the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to a ShotSpotter alert near Southwest 265th Street and 138th Court.
When officers arrived, they found spent shell casings and blood but no victims, according to detectives.
About 30 minutes later, a vehicle carrying two gunshot victims arrived at a Wawa gas station near Southwest 112th Avenue and 248th Street in the Princeton area.
One victim, who deputies later identified as 37-year-old JD Jones Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the second victim, a 25-year-old man, was rushed to Jackson South Medical Center in critical but stable condition.
Authorities said the surviving victim later identified the suspects — Andrew Demetrius Riley, 31, and John Lockley, 21, as the gunmen.
According to deputies, Riley and Lockley ambushed the victims at the original shooting location, where Lockley fired a rifle, killing Jones and shot a second victim in the lower extremities.
Investigators said the suspects then forced the surviving victim into Jones’ vehicle at gunpoint.
When the victim tried to escape by jumping into the driver’s seat, Riley shot him twice in the back of the head, according to an arrest report.
Thinking both men were dead, deputies said Riley then drove the car to Southwest 107th Avenue and 268th Street, abandoned the vehicle, and both suspects fled the scene.
Despite his injuries, the surviving victim managed to drive to the Wawa gas station to seek help.
Cellphone records later placed Riley at both the crime scene and the area where the car was abandoned, deputies said.
Additionally, investigators found evidence that Riley had attempted to call Jones’ phone before it was disconnected from cellular networks.
A motive remains unclear at this time.
Based on witness statements, physical evidence, and phone records, Riley and Lockley are both facing one count each of second-degree murder with a weapon, first-degree attempted murder, armed kidnapping, tampering with physical evidence, and illegal possession of a firearm.
As of Tuesday, both men are being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information on the case to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
