Jimmy Buffett fans can now order specialty “Margaritaville” Florida license plates, but they are just short of a state pre-requisite for the plates to be printed.

According to the Department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor vehicles, new specialty plates must receive at least 3,000 pre-sale vouchers before the new specialty plate will be manufactured and made available.

As of Jan. 20, 2025, there have been 2,143 sales of the specialty plates, 857 orders shot of meeting the 3,000 mark.

There are a few other specialty Florida plates just short of the pre-requisite:

  • Biscayne Bay specialty plate pre-sales have reached 2,801, 199 short of the requirement.
  • Inter Miami CF specialty plate pre-sales have reached 1,493, 1,507 short of the requirement.
  • Florida State Beekeepers Assn. specialty plate pre-sales have reached 929, 2,071 short of the requirement.

Specialty plates in the state of Florida cost $25 in addition to regular automobile registration fees.

Proceeds from license plate sales will go to a charity founded by Buffett, Singing for Change, and will benefit Florida nonprofits that help victims of hurricanes and other disasters.

HB-403, a bill signed last year, paved the way for a Buffett a specialty license plate with the word “Margaritaville” — a Buffett song that has become a nickname for Key West.

Jimmy Buffett, whose sun-drenched songs celebrated life by the shore, died of a rare, aggressive skin cancer at 76.
