LAKE MARY, Fla. – Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony will receive a written reprimand after being accused of making omissions on a driver’s license in 2019.
That ruling came after a Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commission meeting on Thursday in the Orlando suburb of Lake Mary.
The board chose not follow a judge’s recommendation to put the sheriff on an 18-month probationary period.
The omission on Tony’s driver’s license in 2019 led to the complaint.
While living in Pennsylvania in the 1990s, Tony’s license was suspended, something he was accused of not disclosing during the license renewal.
A judge who reviewed the case recommended discipline against Tony, including a written reprimand, an 18-month probationary status and required certified ethics training.
Before the FDLE Commission meeting Thursday morning, Tony’s lawyer appeared on his behalf, claiming the DMV clerk may have made a mistake and that her testimony was insufficient evidence that Tony committed a criminal offense.
“What I am asking this commission to do is to dismiss this,” his attorney said. “It’s been going on since 2019. We are asking this commission to close this chapter.”
The commission chose not to dismiss the case but instead recommended issuing a written reprimand.
All but one commissioner agreed to the written reprimand, with the dissenting commissioner stating that it was perjury and the judge made those recommendations for a reason.
