During her visit to the Key Largo-based rescue on Friday, Birch introduced viewers to the facility’s unique setup, where nearly 300 cats roam between indoor and outdoor spaces.

“This is my first time going to a rescue where there are indoor-outdoor facilities,” Birch said. “We’re here at the Upper Keys Humane Society, and these cats — they live inside, they live outside, and they kind of run the show here.”

Shirley, a representative from the shelter, explained that once kittens grow out of the nursery, they transition to a larger space where they can choose their preferred environment.

“Some of them choose to be indoor, some outdoor, and some like to go both directions,” Shirley said. “They’ve got houses everywhere, and we have about 300, so we need to get them adopted.”

All the cats at the Upper Keys Humane Society are spayed and neutered, ready to be placed in loving homes.
