According to police, the crash was reported around 12:30 a.m.

“One of our officers observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on the MacArthur Causeway, approaching Terminal Isle,” Miami Beach police Officer Chris Bess said.

Police said the driver misjudged a turn, losing control of their vehicle and slamming into another car that was pulled over in the westbound lanes.

“The impact was so significant, the victim’s vehicle was pushed to the eastbound line of traffic,” Bess said.

The crash caused a massive traffic impact on the MacArthur Causeway as both eastbound and westbound lanes were shut down.

“At this point, our investigators do believe that the offender was driving under the influence. He is in custody and a DUI investigation is ongoing,” Bess said.

Police said two people were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center by the Miami Beach Fire Department -- one person who was inside the vehicle that was struck and one person in the suspect’s vehicle. Both are said to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police say this tragedy serves as an important reminder to drive sober or call a taxi or use a rideshare app.

“This could’ve been prevented, and unfortunately, we have two victims in the hospital who are fighting for their lives,” Bess said.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
