PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A man accused of attacking his 67-year-old mother and a 26-year-old man with a machete appeared in Broward County court on Tuesday.
According to a police arrest report, Darrell Roberts was angry after his mother asked him to help a repairman move a washing machine in the garage.
6 p.m. report:
According to police, Roberts, 38, who may suffer from a mental illness, walked to a car to retrieve the machete and stabbed them both on Monday at 1510 SW 190 Ave., in Pembroke Pines.
“One of her hands will likely be amputated,” Officer Danny Hidalgo wrote in his report, adding that she also suffered “deep lacerations to her face.”
The crime scene was at the front lawn of the home where Roberts lives with his mother and sister, police said.
Fire rescue personnel used a helicopter to fly her to Memorial Regional Hospital. Her condition was critical and she was unresponsive, police said.
Roberts allegedly fled in a burgundy Pontiac and police officers stopped him nearby and arrested him, police said.
Neighbor Waldemar Aguila told Local 10 News he heard a loud scream Monday evening and quickly checked to see what happened.
“When that scream came out that was not a normal scream,” he said. “It was like a screeching scream.”
Aguila says he found his neighbors face slashed and her fingers cut off.
“She was bleeding out of her face, her eyes, her mouth, and she wasn’t moving,” he said.
Inmate records show correctional deputies booked Roberts at the main jail in Fort Lauderdale, where he remained without bond.
Roberts faces two counts of attempted homicide. Broward County Circuit Judge Michael Lynch was set to preside over the case.
Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
