MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Ryan Haimo, a student activist, was volunteering for an organization that helps kids who have suffered neglect and abuse when he had an idea.
Ryan was running his Fitness for Kids program at the His House Children’s Home, a nonprofit in Miami Gardens for foster kids when he started a fundraiser.
“I noticed that some of these kids either came to these sessions barefoot or maybe in sandals,” Ryan said. “Some of them had one pair of shoes that they really like and they like to wear it to school, and they don’t want to wear it outside and get it dirty.”
Ryan, a varsity soccer player at NSU University School in Broward County, aimed to raise $15,000 on Just Giving to provide them with new sports and fitness gear, equipment, athletic clothing, sneakers, and access to sports-related activities.
“If anyone else feels like they want to make a difference, they can do it as well,” Ryan said.
