DAVIE, Fla. – A basketball coach at Nova High School was released from jail over the weekend after authorities said he is accused of having sex with a minor.
Dequan Andre Sierra, 29, of Hollywood, was taken into custody Friday by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies from the Weston district, according to detectives.
BSO said deputies responded to a “possible sexual battery call involving a minor” just before 5 a.m. Friday.
Authorities said that the 911 caller told BSO that he found his 17-year-old daughter in the back of a minivan with Sierra, “and that they were doing something sexual,” nearly a block away from his home.
An arrest affidavit obtained by Local 10 News states that the victim told deputies that she and Sierra had sex.
Sierra appeared in Broward bond court Saturday, where a judge found probable cause and set his bond at $50,000, which he has since posted.
Jail records show Sierra is facing one count of solicitation of a minor by an authoritative figure and one count of unlawful sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years old.
According to the school’s website, Sierra worked as a school monitor and boys’ basketball coach. Authorities have not confirmed whether the victim is a student.
The school is located at 3600 College Ave. in Davie.
Detectives also confirmed that Sierra is a father of a 5-year-old and is listed as a caretaker of a 16-year-old.
Broward County Public Schools released a statement to Local 10 News on Monday, which read:
“BCPS is deeply disturbed by the allegations and remains committed to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students. The employee in question will be reassigned away from the school and students – pending the outcome of the investigation – and will face termination if the allegations are substantiated.”
As part of his bond conditions, Sierra has been ordered to have no contact with the victim or any minors.
