According to Fort Lauderdale police, Kimon Derris Black, 22, was driving a 2016 Honda sedan eastbound on Northwest Sixth Street just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday when he struck 45-year-old David Corprew, who was riding a motorized scooter.

Detectives said Black “had no regard for the life of Corprew” when he fled the scene without stopping to help or calling 911 after the crash occurred.

Investigators used surveillance footage to track down Black’s vehicle at a home on Southwest 29th Terrace, where officers later observed him inspecting the damage.

When officers approached, they said Black retreated inside.

Authorities conducted surveillance, and around 8:25 a.m. Friday, Black was seen leaving the residence in the damaged Honda.

Officers initiated a felony traffic stop after he ran stop signs at high speed, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Police said Black was eventually taken into custody without incident.

They also confirmed that the Honda had front-end damage, a caved-in windshield, and what appeared to be hair and blood.

Corprew suffered multiple brain bleeds, a spinal injury and several broken bones. He is not expected to survive, according to investigators.

Jail records show Black is facing one count each of failure to stop or remain at an accident involving serious injury or death and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

As of Monday, he is being held on a $60,000 bond at the Broward Main Jail.
