FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – Surveillance video captured a barrage of gunfire erupting in a Florida City neighborhood early Monday morning, lighting up the night as dozens of shots rang out in the distance.
The gunfire riddled homes in the area near Southwest 10th Street and Sixth Court, leaving bullet holes in several houses, including the home of 90-year-old Rafael Cotto.
3 p.m. report:
“It is crazy. No one is expecting it,” said Anthony De La Rosa, the victim’s grandson.
De La Rosa said Cotto was doing a crossword puzzle in bed when he suddenly felt a piercing pain.
“My sister comes downstairs because my grandpa was screaming, telling her that ‘I got shot,”' De La Rosa said.
He said Cotto had been hit in the shoulder and forearm but didn’t immediately realize it.
“He didn’t even know he got shot here. He was just focused on this,” De La Rosa said.
Cotto’s granddaughter, Samantha Figueroa, described his injuries when speaking to Local 10′s Roy Ramos on Tuesday.
“When I took off his shirt, he had a graze right here and he was shot in the chest,” she said.
Authorities said Cotto was rushed to Jackson South Medical Center in Kendall, where he was treated for his injuries.
Photos from his hospital bed show him to appear in stable condition.
“I am grateful my grandpa is good and I don’t know what was happening, but to those guys, I hope they get caught,” De La Rosa said.
Florida City police said the investigation remains active.
