The good news is, 90-year-old Rafael Cotto is out of the hospital.

The bad news is, he still has a long road to recovery.

Cotto said he was just sitting in his room when he heard gunfire, and the next thing he knows, he’s been shot.

The hail of gunfire ringing out just after 12 a.m. off Southwest 10th Street and 6th Court. Bullets riddled home after home.

Cotto described how the shots went through his storm shutter, through his bedroom door and then struck him.

The bullets hit him as he was just sitting on his bed doing a crossword puzzle.

The injuries were so severe that he was rushed To Jackson South Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

After four days in the hospital, Cotto is now back home, but he said his life has forever changed.

With a bullet still lodged in his shoulder, sadly he’s lost mobility in much of his arm and his hand.

While Cotto said he’s lucky to be alive, he’s just fortunate his 4-year-old grandson wasn’t hurt. The little boy walked out just moments before the shots were fired.

Police are actively searching for the shooters.

Anyone with information that can help police is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
