MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. – A bizarre string of events Saturday morning led Miami Springs police officers to arrest a man on several felony charges, authorities said.
Police said they first encountered Jandier Arrieta, 31, of Hialeah, throwing rocks and damaging the Miami Springs welcome sign in the 1500 block of North Royal Poinciana Boulevard.
When they tried to speak with him, he threw two railroad spikes at a cruiser, denting it and shattering glass, authorities said.
Police said Arrieta jumped into the Okeechobee Canal, where officers had to track him down in a small boat.
The suspect was caught with the aid of two police dogs, but refused to identify himself.
The report states that after being taken to a nearby hospital for K-9 bites to his arm and hand, officers were able to identify Arrieta using facial recognition software.
He was taken to jail on seven felony charges, including criminal mischief, attempted aggravated assault on an officer, shooting or throwing a deadly missile and battery on an officer.
