MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – An investigation is ongoing after a shooting occurred on a Miami-Dade County Transit bus.
It happened early Sunday morning outside a shopping plaza on the corner of Miami Gardens Drive and Northwest Seventh Avenue.
Miami Gardens police roped off the entire shopping plaza right next to the area where the bus was parked.
According to police, all of this started around 3 a.m. when officers responded to a disturbance call.
Investigators say the driver of the Miami-Dade Transit bus got into an argument or disagreement of some sort with passengers who were onboard.
At some point, police said the driver pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting two of the passengers.
A witness who was onboard the bus told Local 10 News that the dispute started when the driver refused to let a man board the bus with a stolen bike.
The witness said the would-be passenger made threats and reached into a bag, at which point the driver pulled out his gun and fired off six shots, hitting the upset passenger and another man, who the witness said was not involved in the incident, but was an innocent passenger sitting in his own seat.
According to the witness, the second man was likely hit by a stray bullet.
Both victims were rushed to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital by helicopter in critical condition, but both would later be pronounced dead.
Police said the bus driver was detained by officers as they conduct their investigation, though it is not clear if he will face any charges.
Police have not confirmed whether the passengers were armed with any weapons of their own.
A spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works told Local 10 News that “Drivers are not allowed to be armed.”
