According to Miramar Fire Rescue, the department was called around 11:20 a.m. regarding a hazmat incident at the Whispering Pines Education Center, located at 3609 S Douglas Road.

Officials said the four adults who were triaged were exposed to the substance. A spokeswoman for the school district said two students were also evaluated at the scene by paramedics.

“Currently all substances tested have been drug related, but this is still an active scene and additional tests are being completed by the hazmat team,” MFR said.

Officials said no one has been transported to the hospital at this time.

According to Miramar police, a student at the Pre-K to 12th grade school brought a sealed bag on campus that contained unbroken pills.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the School Resource Officer (SRO) secured the bag immediately and placed it in a safe location, separate from all students and staff, until the contents could be properly examined,” Miramar police spokesperson Janice McIntosh said in an email to Local 10 News.

According to McIntosh, a few staff members reported feeling lightheaded, which led to Miramar Fire Rescue being called, along with the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s hazmat team.

“At this time, there is no confirmed threat to students or staff, and the situation remains under control,” McIntosh said. “The investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to work closely with our partners to determine the nature of the substance and ensure the continued safety of everyone on campus.”

“We made sure that we triaged every individual who experienced symptoms who complained of any symptoms at all made sure that every individual was decontaminated appropriately to ensure that we could return everyone to a normal school day,” said Miramar Fire Rescue Fire Administrative Officer Tara Smith.

According to a Broward County Public Schools spokeswoman, “the student responsible will receive appropriate consequences.”
