FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A woman who was shot in the chest in Fort Lauderdale over the weekend identified her ex-boyfriend as the gunman before being rushed to the hospital, authorities confirmed Thursday.
According to an arrest report, a safety aide with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department was working near the 100 block of Southwest Third Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on March 30 when the 37-year-old victim approached and said, “Help me, I’ve been shot.”
Officers responded and provided medical aid before the woman identified the shooter as Trenten Nyjel Sheffield, 34, whom she referred to as her ex-boyfriend and by the nickname “Chop.”
She told officers the shooting happened near Northwest 15th Avenue and Northwest 19th Street, police said.
The victim gave officers Sheffield’s cellphone number before being taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries, according to authorities.
Jail records show Sheffield is facing one count of first-degree attempted murder.
As of Thursday, he remains held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
A motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time.
