More than three weeks after a hit-and-run crash left her with a fractured skull, 23-year-old Gabriella Obergon is still recovering from her injuries.
Miami police said Obergon was riding on a red scooter as a passenger with a friend in early March when they were struck by a car near Northeast 79th Street and Fifth Avenue.
The impact left the scooter mangled on the side of the road, while the driver fled the scene, leaving both victims injured in the street.
“I just remembered that we were on the scooter. I don’t remember anything more,” Obergon said.
Miami police identified the driver as 21-year-old Armani Alexis Rodgers.
According to an arrest report, Rodgers and another woman initially ran from the crash, returned to remove the car’s license plate, then fled again.
“The woman came and she saw me and she thought I was dead. That is the reason she ran away,” Obergon said. “Both escaped, but then after, they came back.”
Authorities said Obergon was rushed to the hospital, where she remained for days fighting to stay alive.
She has since regained consciousness but is still undergoing medical treatment.
On Thursday, she returned to Jackson Memorial for tests to monitor brain swelling after undergoing surgery that left her with a metal plate in her head. She now takes medication to prevent seizures.
“The car crashed into us, and I flew six meters,” Obergon recalled.
Authorities say Rodgers turned herself in to police the day after the crash.
Jail records show she is facing two counts of leaving the scene of a crash with serious injuries.
As Obergon continues her recovery, her family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. The link can be found by clicking here.
