PLANTATION, Fla. – Authorities in Plantation announced a major development in a “decades-old missing person” case after they said a submerged vehicle containing “skeletal remains” was discovered Sunday afternoon in a small retention pond.
Plantation police said the vehicle was located around 3:48 p.m. near the intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and North Flamingo Road.
According to investigators, the remains were found inside the car, which had apparently gone undetected underwater for years.
The discovery was made with the help of Sunshine State Sonar, a volunteer group dedicated to solving missing persons cases involving vehicles that vanished along with their occupants.
No additional information about the victim or the circumstances of the case have been released.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” wrote Sunshine State Sonar in a statement on Facebook Monday.
Authorities have not disclosed any information on the person’s age, gender or identity at this time.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
