Florida started to issue REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards with a yellow star on the right top corner in 2010.

The REAL ID requirement also applies to some federal facilities such as military bases.

Congress passed the REAL ID law in 2005, as a 9/11 Commission recommendation. There were about two decades of delays.

The initial deadline was 2008. The Department of Homeland Security’s most recent extension was in 2023 and the current deadline is May 7.
