Fort Lauderdale police arrest suspect in connection with downtown shooting that left man critical

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police have arrested a suspect in connection with a weekend shooting in the downtown area that left a man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed Monday.

Jail records show Willis Anthony Rellanos, 39, was booked into the Broward County Main Jail on Sunday and faces one count of premeditated attempted murder.

Officers said they initially responded to reports of a shooting just before 5 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Southwest First Avenue.

Police said upon arrival, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported the victim to Broward Health Medical Center.

Police said Rellanos remained at the scene and was detained as detectives launched their investigation.

As of Monday afternoon, the victim, who has not been publicly identified, remained hospitalized.

During his bond court appearance Monday morning, Rellanos required a Spanish interpreter.

Prosecutors requested no bond, which the judge granted. A pre-trial detention hearing is scheduled for Saturday.

Local 10 News has requested Rellanos’ arrest report from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed at this time.
