Police: Thief engages in sexual cyberharassment while working as Starbucks barista in Doral

DORAL, Fla. – A 25-year-old man was accused of taking his former Starbucks co-workers’ cellphones to send himself their sexual images without their permission, records show.

One Starbucks barista decided to report her colleague Benjamin Alvarez after he allegedly admitted to taking her cell phone while she was charging it, records show.

Alvarez, who was fired from Starbucks, appeared in court on Wednesday after Doral police officers arrested him on Tuesday outside of the home where he lives with his parents, records show.

Doral police officers reported meeting with the victim on Sept. 4, at Starbucks, at 1380 NW 87 Ave., to discuss what happened when she and Alvarez worked together there on July 11, records show.

According to the Doral police arrest report, the victim said she was charging her phone in the manager’s office when it vanished after Alvarez asked her for her birthday year without “considering that she was giving him the password.”

According to the arrest report, the victim said Alvarez “admitted” to taking her phone and when she recovered it she noticed that he had sent himself some of her nude photographs and videos without her permission.

A detective reported learning that Alvarez had been “having problems with taking people’s cell phones” at Starbucks to steal content and he “had done this before but nobody had reported him.”

The detective reported using a subpoena to access the evidence related to Alvarez’s cell phone number, which was registered to his father.

The detective also reported talking to Alvarez’s mother before she woke him up and he resisted arrest at about 8:20 a.m., on Tuesday, records show.

Miami-Dade inmate records show correctional deputies booked him at 12:52 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Miami-Dade court records show prosecutors filed a case against Alvarez on Tuesday for two felonies and two misdemeanors. During his first court appearance, a judge ordered him to stay away from the victim.

Alvarez faces charges of offenses against computer users, third-degree grand theft, sexual cyberharassment, and resisting an officer without violence to his person. His bond was $3,500.

Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Cristina Miranda is set to preside over the case.
