Jail records show Tameeka Budwah, 45, was arrested Tuesday on charges of interference with custody by a parent, false imprisonment of a child under 13, burglary of an occupied conveyance, violating a domestic violence injunction and petit theft.

According to an arrest report by the Miami Gardens Police Department, Liam Smith, 9, was being driven home by a school transportation vehicle when the driver noticed a vehicle following her.

Police said the driver stopped at a home and was approached by Budwah who began asking the driver questions about her transportation services and said she was there to pick up her son for a doctor’s appointment.

According to the report, the driver asked Budwah to wait while she verified with Anton Laquane Smith, who has custody of Liam, whether she could release the boy to Budwah.

But police said Budwah opened the vehicle door and removed her son before taking off with him in her black 2000 four-door Honda Civic, heading south.

When the driver got a hold of Smith, he confirmed to her that he has full custody of Liam and Budwah is not allowed to have any contact with Liam, authorities said.

Police said Budwah also took Liam’s personal cellphone and school-issued laptop and refused to return the items.

According to the arrest report, after an Amber Alert was issued, Budah spoke on the phone with an officer and agreed to meet the officer at the Miami Gardens police station.

Police said Budwah arrived with Liam who was “visibly shaken and scared.”

He was then turned over to his father while his mother was taken into custody.

As of Wednesday morning, Budwah was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where her bond was listed as “to be set.”
