According to an arrest report from the Homestead Police Department, the crash occurred around 8:18 p.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of Northeast Eighth Street.

Homestead police said their investigation determined that the victim, identified as Jason Martinez, was walking south from the northbound shoulder of Northeast Eighth Street when he entered the roadway and was struck on his left side by a white truck.

According to police, the victim was thrown from the impact, coming to a final rest in the center lane.

Police said Martinez suffered injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel provided aid to him at the scene before transporting him to Jackson South Medical Center, where he died.

According to the report, the driver, Luis Enrique Villarreal, of Miami, went back to the scene with another person just before 10:30 p.m.

Police said his truck had damage to the right front bumper/hood as well as to the right mirror, consistent with evidence at the scene.

According to the report, Villarreal invoked his right to not speak with detectives without an attorney present.

He was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.

As of Friday afternoon, Villarreal was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $7,500 bond.
