Florida lawmakers pass Lucy’s Law with near unanimous votes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida legislature passed the bill dubbed Lucy’s Law late Friday night.

It passed in the state senate with a vote of 31 to 0, while it passed in the house with a vote of 93 to 1.

The bill is in response to boat pilot George Pino being charged initially with only minor misdemeanors in a crash that took the life of a 17-year-old Miami girl named Lucy Fernandez.

Fernandez die d on September 5, 2022, a day after the crash.

The bill heads to the desk of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign it into law.
