TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida lawmakers approved an expansion Friday on the ban on cell phones for elementary and middle school students, and are testing it in high schools.
The current law only bans phones during instructional time, but now the change will expand the ban throughout the school day from bell to bell.
Republican State Rep. Demi Busatta of Coral Gables spearheaded the legislation, which will keep the law out of high schools for now due to their different dynamic.
However, the new expansion creates a pilot program to prevent cell phone use in high schools during the entire school day.
Also, the bill would make it easier to convert traditional public schools to charter schools.
This bill is headed to the desk of Governor Ron DeSantis.
