MIAMI – Cameras captured images of the crash that killed a 23-year-old woman and involved a police officer on March 15 in Miami’s Flagami neighborhood.
The police officer’s body-cam video shows when the patrol car collided with an Uber driver in a Toyota at Northwest Seventh Street and 47 Avenue.
“We know the Uber is at fault,” said Carlos Silva, the attorney representing the grieving family.
Miami Police Chief Manny Morales released a statement Tuesday saying that the criminal investigation was completed but the administrative investigation into the police officer’s actions was ongoing.
Michelle Membreno and Juana Gutierrez were injured while on the sidewalk, waiting at a bus stop.
“It was instant, they didn’t have a second to move,” Silva said.
The video shows the Miami police officer started chest compressions on Membreno after he saw her injured on the ground.
Fire rescue personnel took Membreno and Gutierrez to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where Membreno was pronounced dead.
The police officer has about five years of experience. Silva said there was evidence that the police officer was traveling at 70 mph in a 40 mph zone.
“I think there is comparative fault on the police officer,” Silva said adding it didn’t seem like the officer was responding to a call.
Gutierrez survived the injuries to her leg.
