Travelers being warned ahead of Real ID law going into effect

MIAMI – Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned travelers on Tuesday that the new Real ID law will go into effect Wednesday.

It was passed by congress back in 2005, a product of the 9/11 Commission to Improve National Security.

Your driver’s license is compliant if it has a star in the upper right corner.

Signs are already up at Miami International Airport, alerting passengers of the new requirement.

“We will be honoring passports, other federally recognized IDs, tribal IDs will be recognized,” said Noem, who added that if you do not have a Real ID or something like a passport or a global entry card, you may still board your domestic commercial flight, but you’ll have to be patient, and you may be delayed.

“If it’s not compliant, they may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step, but people will be allowed to fly,” said Noem.
