According to deputies, the crash happened around 5:53 a.m. last Saturday as the victim, Edell Estevez Romero, was crossing the intersection of Northwest 25th Street and 95th Avenue while riding his bicycle.
Deputies said Estevez Romero was struck by an unknown vehicle that was heading west on 25th Street.
Authorities said the driver fled the scene without ever stopping to help Estevez Romero.
The suspect vehicle was described by deputies as a black, 2013-2017 GMC Arcadia or Chevrolet Traverse with damage to the left side mirror.
Frank Aguilar, says MDSO deputies delivered the sad news that Romero, his cousin, was the person involved in the fatal crash.
“To hit someone, flee, not report it is sad,” Aguilar said. “And our family is in a lot of pain.”
Aguilar told Local 10 News that Romero was a hardworking man whose life was cut short.
He said Romero had lived in the U.S. for two years and recently moved to South Florida from Kentucky. He was working at a warehouse in Doral and died while biking to work.
Aguilar said family members are heartbroken by a tragedy made worse by a criminal act.
“This was a life. A human being whose life you turned off. Like a light switch, off,” he said.
