LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. – There haven’t been any arrests in the death of Bernabe “Kiko” Rodriguez, a father who worked as a barber and died in February in Lighthouse Point. He was 41.
Attorney William DiPetrillo, who represents Rodriguez’s grieving family, said the fatal domestic shooting could have been prevented. Rodriguez’s son wants justice.
“The system in this case, I believe failed this person horribly after he was shot to death after filing a petition,” DiPetrillo said referring to Rodriguez’s request for a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend Shelbie Hawk.
DiPetrillo said the petition alleging she had held him at gunpoint was filed in court 28 days before Hawk fatally shot Rodriguez with a Glock.
“This had five armed felonies described in it,“ DiPetrillo said.
The injunction filed in Palm Beach County and served by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office listed Hawk as owning three guns.
“If the Sheriff had read the petition that she had three fire arms, he should have insisted she surrender the firearms,” DiPetrillo said.
Hawk did not respond to requests for comment. Neither detectives nor prosecutors, have accused her of a crime after the fatal shooting.
BSO did not comment because of a policy that applies to cases with potential litigation.
