EL PORTAL, Fla. – A 17-year-old has been charged as an adult after he allegedly brought a gun to school in El Portal, Local 10 News learned Monday.

According to an arrest report from Miami-Dade Schools Police, the incident happened April 25 at Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education, located at 8950 NW Second Ave.
The report states that an “administrative search” on Kingjajah Jerold Clarke’s bookbag revealed a gun inside – specifically a Taurus 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.
Police said Clarke fled the school grounds once the gun was discovered, but was located off campus and taken into custody.
According to the report, Clarke declined to speak with police without an attorney present.
The report does not specify whether school administrators were alerted about the weapon before searching the bag or whether the gun was discovered during a routine search.
Clarke was booked into the Juvenile Assessment Center after his arrest.
He is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
